Situated in Switzerland on a border pass at an altitude of 2473 m, the Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard welcomes hikers, pilgrims and guests passing through all year round.

The Hospice was founded in 1050 by Bernard de Montjoux, archdeacon of Aosta, to welcome and protect the many travellers using this passage through the Alps.

A number of companions who were members of the Aosta Valley clergy helped Bernard to build the house. Thus was born a community and a hospice whose vocation of hospitality has remained uninterrupted to this day.

The congregation of the Canons of the Great St Bernard is also present at the Hospice du Simplon and in several parishes in the region.
