Have you ever laid awake at night because the moon was so bright, hitting your face like a floodlight?🌕✨A fresh alpine breeze around the nostrils to complete the outdoors experience. Gotta love bivvy camping… Early morning I’m woken by a trail runner passing by (good thing I wasn’t sleeping in the middle of the trail), and once again it’s shaping up to be a beautiful day. The light creeping over the mountain tops is gorgeous. After letting my damp sleeping kit dry, I saddle up for the demanding climb to Col de Mille. At the top, the wind is howling. So I seek shelter in the gear room of the refuge there to cook a little instant Teriyaki chicken lunch. Then it’s time for an amazing descent with views of the Mt. Blanc massif, all the way down to Bourg St. Pierre where the long slog back to the Great St. Bernard pass begins. The last 800m of vert on this climb are paved, and the constant traffic with loud motorbikes and racing sports cars reminds me of why I desperately prefer the off road. The closer I get to the top, the darker the sky turns. In the last rays of sunlight I snap a selfie on the pass, and just as I reach the car safely it starts pouring. A massive hailstorm has cars stopping on the side of the road as vision is minimal. From the comfort of my heated car I see another cyclist come up the pass that unfortunately wasn’t so lucky, planning wise. Down in the valley, a large beer and McDonalds completes my culinary journey through Switzerland and Italy. On tomorrow’s agenda: an 11 hour drive back home. So, my first bicycle trip since Central Asia, 8 years ago: what have I learned? Well, primarily that 3 days of intense (hike-a-)biking and 20+ hours of driving is a lot in the timespan of a working week. Looking back it’s all a bit of a blur, honestly. However, what prevails is the feeling of getting that little bit extra out of life. Sure, that might be the mid-life talking. But with a family, going on a solo holiday for 5 days is... complex. You’re easily held back by the obvious -and very valid- excuses. I’m immensely thankful for maartjewest who has made this adventure (and many others) possible. (continues in comments)

🥾 Tour des Combins chez visitswitzerland. Une deuxième journée de la Cabane de Mille à la Cabane de Panossière. Nous avons pris l'itinéraire alternatif en passant par le Mont Rogneux ⛰️. Sommet Suisse culminant à 3084m d'altitude ! La première montée ne se fait pas attendre et devient assez raide sur la fin. Mais depuis le Mont Rogneux, le paysage est dingue 😍 Un début de descente pentu et technique puis on déroule jusqu'à la buvette de Pindin, notre ravito du jour : fromages d'alpage et charcuterie. Avec un accueil incroyable 👌🏻 On attaque ensuite la deuxième montée du jour : le col des Avouillons, qui offre un panorama d'exception sur le glacier de Corbassière 😮 On prend beaucoup de plaisir dans la descente, lacets après lacets, jusqu'à la passerelle de Corbassière. Longue de 190 mètres, elle permet de traverser la moraine du glacier de Corbassière. Tour des Combins Day 3 Recap - Starting with an easy downhill towards impressive Lac de Mauvoisin - plenty of waterfalls left and right on trail. After passing the dam it went upwards towards Cabane FXB Panossière. There is still plenty of snow on the way. The hut allowed for staying dry in a rainy night and recharging the battery pack. The outdoor solar shower of the hut was a good alternative to my mountain lake dips. #glacier #hiking #tourdescombins #tdc

それでも、超充実の3日間！
初日はずっとモンブラン山群を眺めながらのトレッキング！2日目は山小屋の目の前にグラン・コンバンとコルバシエール氷河！
もう気持ち良すぎの3日間。最高でした。

📷 Live updates from the trail WHR Trail Report - 2nd June 2022 - Start location: Orsieres, Switzerland - Finish location: Cabane de Louvie, Switzerland - Distance: 25km / 16mi - Elevation gain: 2,289m / 7,510ft - Elevation loss: 1,524m / 5,000ft - Time: 6.75 hours Day 9 on the trail today and the weather was very typical for the Alps. It was a mix of rain, fog, wind and spectacular clear blue skies. As you will see in the pictures, it almost looks like 2 different days! Today I hiked an alternate route for the Walker’s Haute Route via the Combins massif. The “classic” walker’s haute route leaves Champex-Lac and heads via Sembrancher, Le Chable and Verbier to arrive at the Grand Desert. This alternate route heads via Orsieres and up onto the Tour des Combins trail. It’s a more strenuous route, but you are rewarded with amazing views of Grand Combins and the Bec des Rosses range. ⛰️ Trail conditions: Overall good conditions on this section. - About 6-8 snow patches on the Mont Brule to Fionnay section but all soft and easy to cross. No microspikes needed. - There is a new trail from Cabane Brunet to Plamproz that is very steep in parts. Due to rain, I slipped a few times in the mud but nothing serious. 🐏 Animal sighting: The section up from Fionnay to Cabane de Louvie is a protected wildlife reserve and it's very common to see a herd of ibex grazing along the steep trail. 🛖 Accommodation: Tonight we stayed at cabanedelouvie and I can’t recommend it enough. Not only is the food amazing and the views insane, the guardian, Claudia is lovely! What a day… the ‘Tour des Combins’ in a oner on the mountain bike!! 115km and 4100m vert. The Tour des Combins is a spectacular alpine circular hiking route that goes through Italy and Switzerland. Fairly unknown compared with some of the big iconic alpine hikes like the Tour du Mont Blanc, but in my opinion it’s just as scenic and the riding on the Tour des Combins is MUCH more enjoyable. As it’s a hiking route, there is of course technical single track in places and plenty of my beloved hike-a-bike, but the 85% that is ridable, is some of the best riding I have found in the Alps. The route consist of three main passes; Fenêtre de Durand pass 2,797 m, Col du Mille 2,472m and the Gran San Bernardo Pass 2,473m. The first of which offering epic views over the glacier d’Otemma and the Col du Mille offering spectacular views of Mont Blanc massif. I would highly recommend you add this one to your bucket list, if remote high alpine bikepacking is your bag. Epic gravel tunnels, trails cut through rocks, easy via-ferrata sections, turquoise lakes, plus some of the best high balcony gravel roads I have ridden. It’s also empty! …if you want to avoid super busy trails like the Tour du Mont Blanc, then this is for you. We saw just a handful of people over the entire route. bikepackingcom suggests 3 days to complete the route, but it’s also very doable in 2 days. As for doing it in 1 day… well it was pretty brutal! If I was doing the route just for the enjoyment of riding my bike, then I would have chosen to have done it over 2. Thanks to bikepackingcom, We have spent 5 days in total independence into the Alps to do the “Tour des Combins” with our awesome #gravelbikes (#bombtrackhookext and #bearclawbicycle #beauxjaxon). If you ever plan to do it, be ready to walk and carry your fully loaded bike on climbs and sometimes on descents, but don't worry it’s worth it. It was a tough adventure but an outstanding one. Our stages: Day 1: Bourg St Pierre => Col du Grand St Bernard 17km / 890D+ / 261D- / 2h23 Day 2: Col du Grand St Bernard => Champillon 30km / 871D+ / 963D- / 3h41 Note: the climb to Plan Puitz is more like climbing with a bike. Day 3: Champillon => Lac Mauvoisin 26km / 902D+ / 985D- / 4h31 Note: a wide handlebar can be an issue. Day 4: Lac Mauvoisin => Col de Mille 28km / 857D+ / 916D- / 3h33 Note: a tunnel was closed. Wiem, że są roślinożerne, ale uwierzcie, że jak na waskiej półce skalnej miałam się minąć z kilkunastokoziorożcowym stadem, a ten, którego widzicie na zdjęciu stał nade mną 2 metry na skale i patrzył na mnie, to nawet ja miałam dreszcze. Wszystkie inne koziorożce odkopytkowały po stromych zboczach, a ten stał, obniżył głowę z rogami (a ich rogi mogą mieć do metra!), przebierał przednim kopytem, prychał i wpatrywał się we mnie bez mrugnięcia. Chętnie bym obeszła go naokoło, ale stromizna nade mną i pode mną pozwalała poruszać się tylko koziorozcom. Lub z pomocą lin i stanowisk. . 🇬🇧 Alpine ibex, my encounters on the trail. We see each other often. I know that they are herbivores, but believe me, when I was supposed to pass a dozen or so of them on a narrow rock ledge, and the one you see in the photo was standing 2 meters above me on the rock and was looking at me, even I was shivering. All the other ibexes kicked up the steep slopes and this one stood, lowered his head with horns (and their horns can be up to one meter!), picked his front hoof, snorted and stared at me without blinking.
