From Chanrion, you can see the rest of the route. Descending the gently rolling ridges of the pasture, you arrive at the Grand Charmotane bridge, which you cross.
After an initial steep climb, the slope gradually levels out. An easy path leads through areas of grass and rock to the Fenêtre de Durand. It was here in 1943 that Luigi Einaudi, a famous Italian politician fleeing fascism, was welcomed by Swiss soldiers. After benefiting from Swiss hospitality, he became the first President of the Italian Republic.
From the Fenêtre de Durand, the trail, dominated by the imposing mass of Mont Gelé and the gentler slopes of Mont Avril, crosses a scree slope to reach the pastures of Thoules. The trail then climbs towards the lakes, which it follows before descending into the valley to reach Ollomont.
