Today is World Glacier Day. So here’s a shot of the snout of the Corbassière Glacier in the Swiss Alps, taken while hiking the Tour des Combins in 2023.
For context, there are markers painted on the rocks by the stream in the foreground, indicating the extent of the glacier (and by extension, the staggering scale if its retreat) in previous years - in 2018, it extended down to roughly the centre-foreground of this image (see left foreground of crop/detail at the end), a loss within just five years somewhere on the scale of a shopping centre.
